Step Back in Time at the Fort Richardson State Park

Step Back in Time at the Fort Richardson State Park

What was once a United States Army installation is now a state park and historic site that welcomes thousands of visitors every year.

We're talking about Fort Richardson, and it's named after General Israel Richardson who died in the Battle of Antietam.

Today, the property is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It's just 90 minutes from our Uptown Dallas apartments and is where people come to enjoy recreational activities and see historic buildings.

Highlights include:

Walking Tour

During the fort's eleven years of active military existence, it housed over 5,000 soldiers. The soldiers enforced martial law and the reconstruction policies of the federal government. The walking tour highlights several of the fort's buildings, including:

Commanding Officer's Quarters

Built using board and batten construction, the Commanding Officer's Quarters was the largest house built on post grounds. It features a parlor, kitchen, dining room, and two bedrooms. The home is the country's last remaining cotton-wood frame officer's quarters from the Indian War era.

Post Hospital

Completed in 1869, the hospital is made of sandstone quarried in a neighboring county. The surgeon was challenged by unfilled medical requisitions. Today, visitors can see his office, along with the dispensary, kitchen, and more.

The Bakery

The bakery operated 24 hours a day. It featured a beehive oven and produced between 600 and 800 loaves of bread daily. The bakery was complete with tables and shelves and was known for being unbearably hot during the summer months.

Visitors can also enjoy picnicking, horseback riding, and fishing. The park loans fishing equipment and anglers find that Quarry Lake is stocked with bass, trout, and catfish.

Fort Richardson is just one of the state parks near our Dallas luxury apartments. If you're looking for a place to call home, please contact us. We would love to give you a tour where you can see firsthand all we have to offer.
